Then there is the Cross Mini ballpoint pen refill, a standard D1 refill used in their multipens.

Check out our Complete Guide to Cross Ballpoint Pens for more info on the different pens.

Cross ballpoint pen refills are a bespoke size designed explicitly for their ballpoint pens and therefore do not fit any other brand of pen.
At the end of the refill is a color-coded plastic adapter with a screw thread to secure the refill in place. The advantage of this refill mechanism is that you are not dealing with any springs that could fall out.

These are made by the U.S based manufacturer Monteverde and the German specialist refill manufacturing company Schmidt and Fisher Space Pens supply a pressurized Cross refill.
Monteverde Alternative Cross Classic Ballpoint Pen Refills
Monteverde makes a medium and broad alternative refill for Cross ballpoint pens. It is a metal refill with a color-coded screw-threaded plastic adapter that screws into the barrel of the ballpoint in exactly the same way that genuine Cross refills do.
Monteverde refills use “Soft Roll Ink Technology,” a very low viscosity ink sometimes known as hybrid ink. This type of ink is very smooth flowing and glides more easily across the paper than traditional ballpoint pen inks.
Check out our guide, Ballpoint Rollerball or Gel Pen, for more information on the different types of pens and inks.

Schmidt white labels their refills, meaning they will sell them branded with another manufacturer’s name and supply refills to many big pen manufacturers.
Check out our Ultimate Guide to Schmidt Pen Refills for more information.
It is unlikely that you will find anyone selling a Cross alternative refill with Branded with Schmidt C600, but if you look on Amazon, you will find companies such as Europens and Jaymo selling Cross-compatible ballpoint pen refills.
These are, without a doubt, manufactured by Schmidt, and sometimes they hint at the refill’s origins in their descriptions by referring to high-quality German ink.
Check out our Ultimate Guide to Pen Refills for more information.

The refills are all fitted to Selectip pens in exactly the same way as they are all the same size; they just contain different ink formulations and have different tips.
6. Cross Selectip Gel Rollerball Pen Refills
The Cross Selectip gel rollerball refills are smooth writing gel ink refills with a medium tip. Its gel ink is of archival quality and is available in four ink colors.
Cross Selectip refills will also fit older Sheaffer pens that used to use the same refill known as the Sheaffer C Style refill.
It is not known if Sheaffer was buying them from Cross and rebranding the refills or vice versa. However, Cross now owns Sheaffer, and you can no longer buy Sheaffer C Style refills.

The ink is supplied in bottles that contain 2fl oz/62.5ml, and there are five colors to choose from, which are:
- Black
- Blue-Black
- Green
- Red
- Violet
Cross-fountain pen ink is not harmful to pens and can be used in any fountain pen with an ink convertor fitted that enables bottled ink.
A few years ago, members of the Fountain Pen Network suggested that the German Stationery manufacturer Pelikan make the bottled ink for Cross.
It is possible that this may be true as some companies specialize in making a product and then rebrand them for sale by other companies.
Ultimately, it does not matter who makes their ink or nibs as long as it is of the quality that you associate with Cross’s products.
12. Cross Ink Converters
Cross makes two different ink converters for using bottled ink with their fountain pens.
These are not interchangeable, as one pushes into the front-end section of the pen and the other screws into a threaded section of the front end of the pen.
Cross ink converters are a bespoke size and cannot be used in any fountain pen manufactured by another brand.
They can only be used with the fountain pens listed in the next section. If you have an older fountain pen not listed, you will need to contact Cross for advice.
12.1. Cross Fountain Pen Converter Push-in Style

The converter is a piston fill converter; to use it, simply dip the nib into the bottle of ink and then turn the screw at the end, drawing the ink into the converter’s reservoir.
The Cross Push in Style Ink Converter fits the Following Fountain Pens:

16. Cross & Sheaffer Refill Compatibility
AT Cross bought Sheaffer in August 2014 for a cheeky little 15 million US Dollars, so it is natural that over the years, there has been some crossover in making and using refills.
It appears that some Cross refills are rebranded as Sheaffer and not the other way round; as in the Sheaffer catalogs, the product codes start with an 8 and are appended SH.
Nearly all Cross manufactured products have codes that start with an 8, and nearly all Sheaffer manufactured products have codes that start with a 9.
The refills are as follows:
- Cross Selectip Jumbo ballpoint pen refill
- Cross Classic ballpoint pen refill
- Cross Mini Ballpoint Pen Refill
- Cross Selectip Gel Refill
Check out our Ultimate Guide to Sheaffer Pen & Pencil Refills to see which Sheaffer pens are using the rebranded Cross refills.
17. Where Can I Buy Cheap Cross Refills
You can buy Cross refills directly from the Cross website, but obviously, you will be paying the full retail price. If you want to save money and buy cheap Cross refills, then Amazon is probably as good as anywhere. Many other online stores will sell them, but they struggle to compete with Amazon on prices and postal costs.
If you also have a different brand of pen, check out Pen Refill Guides, where there is a complete list of our in-depth refill guides for each manufacturer.

I have a 10KT gold pen of my father’s from Bendix. The logo is on the top of the clip area. He is gone and not sure when he got this. He took an early retirement in the early 1990’s. There are no identifying numbers on the inside (extra fine) it came with 2 extra refills, but I don’t know exactly what kind or where to buy them.
How to find a spring for my Cross Bailey pen that takes 8514 refill? Please help. Thank you.
Not sure if this will help you, but I own a Cross mechanical pencil with the same print on the inside and I have found that 0.9mm lead (60mm length), any brand, works very well.
How can I tell what diameter lead my cross pencil is? There is an indication on the inside that simply says 2-3/4″ Thin Lead.
